Saturday night at the BankNH Pavilion in Gilford, NH was on fire as Country Music Superstar singer/songwriter Brad Paisley and his “Truck Still Works” tour rolled into town. Paisley is a summertime staple in the Northeast, bringing his fun upbeat concerts to the New England area for the last twenty plus years.
On this leg of the tour, he’s taking Social Media star and BBR recording artist Alexandra Kay along for the ride. Kay, fresh off a European run, had about 25 minutes, about five songs, including “Cupid’s a Cowgirl” and “That’s What Love Is” did not seem long enough for the crowd. Connecting with the audience, talking about a recent long-term relationship that ended, and the new relationship with her guitar player who unfortunately wasn’t at this show. Kay owned that stage for those 25 minutes, showing the confidence of a seasoned pro.
Next up was Walker Hayes, with his blend of country and pop mix, but it’s his storytelling that sets Walker Hayes apart. Turning honest real-life stories into songs. Kicking off his set with “U Gurl,” “Stetson,” then, into the feel-good song “You Broke Up With Me,” and of course he wraps his set with his smash hit “Fancy Like.” To say Walker brought the energy level to 15 is an understatement. The crowd was definitely feeling his energy and matching it. Hayes let us know that he’s dropping a new single very soon!!! It’s a song he wrote for his dad after he passed away. Overall, Walker Hayes slayed it, with banger after banger. I can’t wait till he comes back around again.
Now the moment the whole venue was waiting for, The legendary Brad Paisley. As soon as the lights went down everyone was on their feet, ready for an incredible night of hits, nostalgia and insane musicianship, and a huge videoboard behind the stage. Brad kicked off the show with his latest single “Truck still works” which is also the name of the tour. The 21-song list consisted of fun hearted upbeat to his signature emotional ballads.
Paisley fun sense of humor was on full display during the medley of “Mr. Policeman,” “East Bound and Down,” and “In the Jailhouse Now,” they played a video on the lines of Smokey and the Bandit, with Paisley trying to get to the venue on time outrunning the police in a trans-am. Towards the end of the medley, six New Hampshire State Police officers came on stage and surrounded him. Brad tried to bribe them with guitar picks, which seemed to work because they walked off the stage after the song was over.
Standout songs included, “Ticks,” “Water,” “Mud on the Tires,” and of course “Celebrity.” Brad welcomed Walker Hayes back to the stage to sing “I’m Still a Guy,” as well as bringing Alexandra Key back out for “Whiskey Lullaby” Brad closed out the show with his banger “Alcohol” that left the whole venue buzzing! (no pun intended)
All in all, Paisley’s set was just about perfect, between the feel good songs, loving ballads, and epic guitar riffs. Whether this was your first time seeing Brad, or the 8th time (yes, this was my 8th time seeing his show) you left feeling better than when you arrived. Brad proved he’s still a staple in the touring scene.
