Under the Sun with Sublime at Levitate

Sublime's appearance at the Levitate Music Festival was a triumphant celebration of their enduring legacy in the realm of alternative rock and ska punk. Taking to the stage with their trademark laid-back California vibe, Sublime immediately had the audience in the palm of their hands with their infectious energy and timeless sound. Jakob Norwell, the son of the original lead singer stepped into the formidable shoes of the late Bradley Nowell and delivered vocals that paid homage to the band's iconic sound while injecting his own spirited charisma into each song.

Before taking the state we had the pleasure of hanging backstage with the guys. Down to earth people. Just like their music they were as relaxed as the music they would be playing. We did a private little photoshoot with the band before they took the stage. From the moment they launched into their set, the crowd was transported back to the '90s, when Sublime first emerged as pioneers of a genre-blending musical style that effortlessly fused punk rock, reggae, ska, and hip-hop influences. Their performance was a masterclass in musical versatility and crowd engagement. Bass guitarist Eric Wilson and drummer Bud Gaugh anchored the performance with their tight, dynamic rhythms that provided the perfect foundation for Sublime's eclectic mix of genres. Their chemistry onstage was palpable, reflecting years of musical camaraderie and a deep-rooted passion for their craft.

Highlights of the set included classic hits like "Santeria," "What I Got," and "Wrong Way," each song greeted with enthusiastic cheers and sing-alongs from the crowd. These tracks served as a reminder of Sublime's enduring appeal and the timeless quality of their music, which continues to resonate with fans old and new. The band even debuted “Feel Like That” featuring Stick Figure and joined the band to perform it live for the first time.

The festival atmosphere only enhanced the experience, with the sun setting over the outdoor venue and a sea of fans swaying to the infectious rhythms. Sublime's music seemed tailor-made for such a setting, creating an atmosphere of communal celebration and carefree nostalgia. The crowd was a mixed variety however, everyone was in the same mindset of peace and tranquility.  The festival was amazing. This was our first time and will not be our last time. Everything about Levitate and the ground was nearly perfect. The only issues that I noticed was a few lapses with the sound system. We are not sure of the causes but it did happen a few times. It was a very hot day and that may have played a part. The band pushed through it and delivered the best show they could do. Jakob is growing into his own identity with the band and we cannot wait to see where this journey takes him. We just know we want to be along for the ride.

Sublime's performance at the Levitate Music Festival was a testament to their status as legends of alternative rock. They delivered a set that was both a nostalgic trip down memory lane and a reaffirmation of their relevance in today's music scene. For fans of Sublime, it was a night to remember—a blend of good vibes, great music, and a timeless connection that transcends generations. If Sublime is headed near you do yourself a favor….Buy. The.
