Chromeo Nights takes over Boston

The co-headlining tour of Chromeo and The Midnight continued into its third week in Boston

Wednesday night. The Roadrunner hosted the “Chromeo Nights” tour for an incredible night of

synthwave from The Midnight followed by Chromeo which had the crowd dancing all night. Girl

Ultra, an alternative R&B artist from Mexico City was the opening act of the night who brought a

more mellow vibe to Roadrunner. Her music pushed the limits of modern femininity with lyrics

and moves that dove into sexuality and self image. The crowd's energy did not match the effort

of Girl Ultra and company’s performance but the crowd erupted when the set concluded as they

knew The Midnight was up next.

As members of The Midnight took the stage, both tiers of the Roadrunner welcomed

them with cheers and applause. They started off the night with “Days of Thunder” off of their

2014 album “Days of Thunder” which starts with the sound of rain and a revving engine and

then dances between Tyler Lyles’ vocals and Justin Klunk on saxophone. This is the first tour

that founding member Tim Ewan isn’t a part of but that didn’t stop him from making a guest

appearance and helping on vocals during “Sunset” off of their 2016 album Endless Summer.

Ewan announced prior to the start of the tour that he would only be a studio member going

forward so this surprise appearance brought the energy through the roof. “Vampires” was next

and the sound of Justin Klunk’s saxophone could be heard not from the stage, but from the

crowd as he ran through the majority of the crowd, even up on the second level.

As the lights went down to welcome Chromeo, their intro started over the speakers and

the crowd all sang in unison “Chro-me-o-eo-o” as the duo of David Macklovitch and Patrick

Gemeyal took the stage. The electricity of the music matched the electricity of the crowd as

Chromeo went into “Fancy Footwork” of their 2007 studio album Fancy Footwork. As their set

concluded roars of the crowd could be heard for miles begging for an encore. Giving the

audience what they wanted, Chromeo returned to the stage for “Personal Effects” of their 2024

album Adult Contemporary.
